When redeployment may apply

If adjustments to your current role are not enough, or your health means you can no longer do it safely, redeployment to a suitable alternative role can itself be a reasonable adjustment under the Equality Act 2010 (or the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 in Northern Ireland).

What a fair process looks like

  • Consideration of suitable vacancies at the same or a lower level, sometimes with priority status over external candidates
  • A trial period in the new role where practical
  • Support such as training or a phased handover

If no suitable role is found

If a genuinely suitable role cannot be found after a proper search and consultation, dismissal on capability grounds may follow, but employers are expected to have explored redeployment first as part of a fair process.

Checklist

  • Ask in writing to be considered for redeployment if your current role is not sustainable
  • Ask what internal vacancy information you will be given access to
  • Get advice from a union or Acas if you feel the search was not genuine
